Nigeria crash out of the World Cup despite win over Spain
Despite a superb comeback by the falconets to defeat Spain 2 – 1 in their last group game of the ongoing FIFA u20 Womens World Cup in New Papua Guinea, Nigeria failed to go through to the knockout stage.
The standings
The Spaniards knowing a draw or at least a slim loss to Nigeria will take them through opened the scoring as early as the 6th minute when Alba Redondo found the back of the net completing a fine move.
Barely five minutes later, the falconets restored parity through Onyebuchi to give Nigeria a lifeline. Spain had several chanced to take the lead before half time, but the ladies fluffed all efforts that came their way with both teams going into the break 1 – 1.
Chimwendu Ihezuo scored to give Nigeria the lead with the falconets needing three more goals for any hopes of progressing.
With six minutes left to play, Ogbonna was sent off after the received a second yellow card. It ended Nigeria 2 – 1 Spain.
Recall that the falconets also came from a goal down to beat Canada in their second group game.
Japan and Spain made it through on goals difference despite having six points each as well as Nigeria.
The falconets dropped, no thanks to their 6 – 0 opening loss in the hands of Japan in their opening group game.
