This is the first time in three years that Real Madrid will be leaving the Estadio Vicente Calderon with a victory over their bitter rivals Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid defender Stefan Savic was the major culprit for the hosts, as his gaffe gave the visitors two goals in the encounter that sends Real Madrid to the top of the standings.
Savic brought down Lucas Vazquez in the 22nd minutes of play, and the referee wasted no time awarding a free kick to the visitors in which Ronaldo stepped forward and fired the ball at the top corner of the net to go give Real Madrid the lead in the 23rd minutes.
Both sides however went to the break with the visitors leading 1-0 at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.
Stefan Savic was again at the receiving end in the 71st minute as he fouled Cristiano Ronaldo in which the Portuguese man stood up afterwards to net the spot kick, and six minutes later, Gareth Bale supplied a pretty pass for Ronaldo to get his hat-trick.
Meanwhile, Barcelona who are missing Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were held to a goalless draw at home by visiting Malaga.
